Why Your Shirt Still Smells After Washing (And How to Fix It)
Posted by Janelle Castle on
Picture this.
You've just pulled your favourite t-shirt out of the wash.
It smells clean.
It looks clean.
You put it on.
Then by 10:17am, your armpits are giving off the unmistakable aroma of a forgotten gym bag left in a hot ute for three days.
What gives?
Surely your deodorant has packed up and left the chat?
Not so fast.
The truth is, your deodorant often gets blamed for crimes it didn't commit.
Your Armpits Are Innocent(ish)
Here's something most people don't know.
Fresh sweat doesn't actually smell.
That's right.
The sweaty culprit isn't sweat itself. It's the bacteria that throw a wild little party when sweat, skin cells and body oils all get together.
Unfortunately, that party doesn't always stay on your skin.
Over time, bits of sweat, oils, bacteria and deodorant residue can build up in your clothing fibres.
Especially around the underarms.
And once those little stink-makers move in, they're surprisingly difficult to evict.
The Sneaky Reason Your Clothes Smell Clean... Until You Wear Them
Ever noticed a shirt can smell perfectly fine on the hanger but start whiffing within minutes of wearing it?
That's because heat and moisture wake up the bacteria and residues hiding in the fabric.
The shirt isn't dirty.
It's carrying baggage.
And just like that one friend who can't stop talking about their ex, it keeps bringing the past back into the present.
Is Natural Deodorant To Blame?
Not usually.
Natural deodorants often contain nourishing ingredients like plant oils, butters and waxes.
These ingredients help create effective odour protection without relying on aluminium salts or other nasties.
However, like sunscreen, moisturiser or makeup, some residue can occasionally build up on clothing over time.
That's not a sign the deodorant isn't working.
It's usually a sign your shirt needs a little extra TLC.
How To Rescue A Smelly Shirt
Before you throw it out, try these tricks.
For Oily Underarm Build-Up
Grab some dishwashing liquid.
Yep. The same stuff you use on last night's lasagne dish.
Apply a small amount directly to the underarm area and gently work it into the fabric.
Leave it for 30–60 minutes and wash as normal.
This helps break down body oils and deodorant residue.
For Yellow Stains
Mix:
-
2 parts hydrogen peroxide
-
1 part dishwashing liquid
-
1 part baking soda
Apply to the stained area and leave for an hour or two before washing.
Always patch test first, especially on coloured garments.
Because nobody wants tie-dye surprises.
For The Stink That Refuses To Die
Soak the garment in warm water with a cup of white vinegar for one to two hours.
Then wash normally.
Simple.
Cheap.
Remarkably effective.
Let's Talk About Gym Clothes
Actually...
Let's have a little heart-to-heart.
Most activewear these days is basically stretchy plastic pretending to be clothing.
Many workout garments are made from petroleum-derived synthetic fibres and may contain a cocktail of chemical treatments and additives, including PFAS ("forever chemicals"), BPA, phthalates, flame retardants and other ingredients we'd personally rather keep out of our wardrobes.
Now, we're not saying your leggings are plotting against you.
But when you're hot, sweaty and working up a lather, we'd much rather see your skin wrapped in natural fibres than marinating in what is essentially a fancy polyester sandwich.
Call us old fashioned.
Natural fibres like organic cotton, hemp, linen and merino wool breathe better, feel better and tend to hold onto less odour than synthetic fabrics.
They're kinder on your skin.
Kinder on the planet.
And let's be honest...
Your armpits deserve better than spending leg day trapped inside a plastic bag.

The Real Question
If your shirt smells halfway through the day, ask yourself:
Is it really my deodorant?
Or is it that favourite t-shirt that's survived three music festivals, two house moves and approximately 700 washes?
Sometimes the answer isn't changing your deodorant.
Sometimes it's giving your clothes a proper clean.
Or admitting that old faithful has finally reached retirement age.
Performance Without Compromise
At Mr. Pitts, we make natural deodorant for people who sweat.
Groundbreaking, we know.
For tradies.
For gym junkies.
For busy mums.
For busy dads.
For people who run late.
For people who run marathons.
And for those brutally hot Aussie summer days when your deodorant deserves a bravery medal.
Because natural deodorant should do more than smell nice in the tin.
It should show up when things get sweaty.
Smelling good shouldn't require toxic chemicals.
And your deodorant shouldn't take the blame for a shirt that's secretly been harbouring a bacterial squatters' convention.
Stay fresh,
The Mr. Pitts Team
